First "Running Guizhou World Heritage" Ultra Trail League Opens at Fanjingshan with 2,000+ Runners

More than 2,000 runners set off from the east gate of Fanjingshan in Jiangkou County, Guizhou, on November 7 for the opening leg of the first "Running Guizhou World Heritage" ultra trail league, according to 中国新闻网. The 100-kilometer Baiyue category and the 50-kilometer Fanxing category were the first to leave the start line, sending competitors on a long traverse of a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.

中国新闻网 reports that the course crosses both the eastern and western flanks of the mountain, linking the wild terrain of Jiangkou and Yinjiang counties. Runners climb through successive ridgelines on a route that connects the two sides of the massif, passing through shifting cloud and mist while taking in the rural culture of eastern Guizhou. The two halves of Fanjingshan present markedly different forest landscapes, both of which are visible from the course.

Why it matters

The race is the first edition of a league designed to thread together all five of Guizhou's world heritage sites — four natural and one cultural. According to 中国新闻网, the province holds more national-level World Natural Heritage listings than any other in China, and the series is built to showcase them through sport.

Organizers have routed the courses to avoid the core protected zones of each heritage property, 中国新闻网 reports, and the league uses a staged points system in which results at each stop count toward an overall standing. Fanjingshan is described as a key stop in that structure.

Four distances, one mountain

The Fanjingshan event offered four categories. The 100-kilometer race runs beyond a hundred kilometers with close to 5,900 meters of cumulative ascent, requiring competitors to race through both day and night in what 中国新闻网 characterizes as a demanding test of endurance. The 50-kilometer category carries more than 3,100 meters of climbing and places a premium on pacing and all-round mountain ability.

The shorter 25-kilometer and 15-kilometer races also include substantial elevation gain, giving more experienced and first-time trail runners a way to experience the heritage landscape at a manageable scale. Every course is supported with timing checkpoints and aid stations, 中国新闻网 reports, as part of the event's safety arrangements.

The league's terrain is varied by design: 中国新闻网 notes that its routes take in mountains, forest and streams across the five heritage locations.

Racing as a tourism draw

Beyond the competition itself, the Fanjingshan stop is being used as a platform to promote Tongren's wider tourism offerings. 中国新闻网 describes the event as an immersive introduction to the prefecture, built around the Fanjingshan name. Runners and visitors can climb to the Golden Summit, then descend to explore Zhaisha Dong Village and Zhongnanmen Ancient City, sample local Tongren food, experience Tujia and Miao ethnic culture, and take in hot spring retreats.

The stated aim is to convert the flow of athletes into spending on tourism, using the race to draw visitors and the running to showcase the scenery.

What to watch: whether the league's staged points format and its heritage-site routing draw repeat fields at the remaining stops on Guizhou's five-site circuit.
